Mickie Sherwood’s Magic Moments in Romance

Memorial Day Weekend Snippets

5/28/13 Thanks to all who participated!

It’s Friday morning, the beginning of the long awaited Memorial Day weekend. It’s a time for remembering those who died in active duty to our country. I want to mention my uncle who was a Marine (OO-RAH) during the Vietnam War. He stepped on a landmine when I was a senior in high school. I don’t have to tell the rest. I didn’t get to see him when he was shipped home or prior to burial. My parents wouldn’t allow it. Because of that, I sometimes imagine I’d see this legless man hunched on a street corner, and I’d recognize him after all the years. I’d bring him home with me. I guess that’s called denial—or crazy.

Thank you to the men and women who gave their lives defending our freedoms.

I didn’t intend this to be a “bring-me-down” post.

I want to share Magic Moments in Romance Snippets from my mainstream romance novels. Also, I want you to share.

If you’re an author of mainstream romance novels, published or unpublished, I invite you to leave a four-sentence snippet in the comments. Include the name of your novel, a buy link, if you have one and one of your website links. It’s okay to include snippets from a couple of novels in that one comment.

No short links. Let visitors see where they’re headed should they choose to follow your link.

No covers, please.

If you’re a reader and want to salute your fallen loved one this Memorial Day Weekend, that’s fine, too.

This is a “G” rated site. So, keep it clean.

Unnamed & Unedited WIP

Age had had no impact on her beauty. Jordan’s marvelous eyes shone with uncertainty as her nostrils flared slightly when she drew a cleansing breath. She nervously wet her lips with the tip of her tongue. That act slung Deke back to another time and place where they once enjoyed one another’s company—a lot.

Like Slow Sweet Molasses

Lt. Chance Alexander made his appearance on the second floor stopping dead in his tracks at the sight before him. He was a man of the world. A connoisseur of beauty. Her effervescence sparkled brilliantly in the drab windowless department, the aura spreading his way like slow, sweet molasses.

Cutie and the Cowboy Trucker

Veronica backed up a few steps, never wavering under his gaze shielded by mirrored shades and a soft-looking crushable Stetson. Her own disheveled reflection in his lenses broadcast alarm, but not the uncertainty swirling in the center of her abdomen. Her butterscotch complexion deepened as she stared him down. Or better yet, up and down, for even at her five-nine height, Mike was still head and shoulders taller.

BayouBabe99er

Soon they cruised the open water, their bodies rocking to the motion as they cut through the waves. Drake positioned himself at Sharlene’s back. His hands held the rail on either side of her body as a deterrent to her tumbling from the jerky gyration. A fine spray misted them as they sailed along.

Nicked Hearts

Too late for K.C. already had the door open and one thong on the slippery gravel slope. Nick was out of his seat so fast when he saw her pitch forward. A giant step had him across the console and onto the driver’s seat. He jerked her to him the instant his muscled grip banded her arm.

Louisiana Hot Sauce

Mesha’s refuge seemed to get farther away the harder she pushed. She tamed her hair for another quick glance that settled a foreboding in the pit of her stomach, for she realized he was swifter than she. That truth bore out as his long legs galloped in the hunt and a vise squeezed her upper arm, goading her to fight for her life.

“Stop hitting me!” Jack commanded, flinging the arm out that held her captive, the move dangling her about like a rag-doll.

  1. Thanks for remembering WHAT Memorial Day is all about. My dad as a very young man served in Korea (two purple hearts and a field promotion) and my maternal grandfather served as head chaplain with Patton’s 11th Armoured Division in WWII. I’ve had many service members in my family–most recently my nephew who recently served in Afghanistan. We should never forget their sacrifice!

  2. Mickie, yours is not a “bring-me-down” post. It makes us remember why we have a Memorial Day and its real purpose. My dad served in Korea, I am grateful he returned with all of his limbs but he was not unharmed, my mother told me he had terrible nightmares about the war. My brothers and I learned about the dreams and nightmares after he died. I regret not knowing, I am not sure what I would have done differently, but, in my heart I think maybe hug him more.

  3. Mickie, thanks for this post. My father is Vietnam and Korea war veteran. He is still alive, but he has plenty of war stories to tell. And for 43 years, he has been telling me the story of how he went AWOL so he could see me be born. He wanted to count my fingers and toes before he shipped out. Each time Memorial Day rolls around, I think of how fortunate I am to still have him with me. And I also think of how blessed we are that we live in a country where men and when died so we can enjoy our freedoms. Thanks for recognizing them!

  4. Love this idea. Thanks for allowing us to join in also.

“I suggest you listen to her, Riley,” Dolly said with a laugh. “I know how bad morning sickness can get, and when you need to hurl, there’s no stopping you.”
Riley looked into Calley’s hazel eyes. “I would think if it were that bad, she’d have stopped sooner. Besides, what kind of a mother drives like a maniac and puts her unborn child at risk?”
Calley took a step toward him. “Why you patronizing son of …” She lurched and turned to the side. Not far enough. She threw up on Riley’s polished black boots.

  5. Thanks for the invite, Mickie.

And for the first time, without any fear or uncertainty churning in her stomach, Kelly took a good look at her Dom. Dark complexioned, as though he spent a lot of time in the sun, he had a strong, masculine face. His hair was short, except for his bangs, which occasionally slipped down into his eyes before he shrugged or pushed them back into place.
Under this lighting, which was softer and more intimate than the lights at the chaining station, his hair gleamed a medium golden brown, like mahogany with gold streaks.

  6. Thank you Mickie for the invite 🙂

ANGEL DIDN’T MOVE. SHE listened to his syllables roll over his tongue completely enchanted by him, wearing his worn, black leather jacket, rich blue sweat shirt and boot-cut jeans and black leather cowboy boots. Weak in the knees, her eyes covered every detail; his curly dark hair, sparkling, bright blue eyes, and dark tan. All the little parts that made up the whole.

  7. My Memorial Day Tribute to my father: RM Morris, Major, US Army, 1936-1958, passed away in 1995, and was buried at Fort Sam Houston Cemetery, with full military honors. He served his country throughout the WWII era and the post war Occupation of Korea and later, Austria.
He taught me to love and respect my country, and the very worst he could say to my younger brothers and me was a very slow, deep, “I’m disappointed in you.”
You can read about him in Once a Brat, Always a Brat, published by Vanilla Heart Publishing.
